South of Bergerac but north of the Garonne valley, this region is one of rolling hills, farmland and forest dotted with hilltop villages.
The Lot, Dordogne and Garonne rivers are all slow and full at this stage as they near the sea.
The hillsides are covered with vines (the Buzet appellation at Agen is especially good) and plum, apple and pear orchards. Dried plums - pruneaux d'Agen - are a speciality.
Above all visitors adore strolling the the extraordinary 'bastide' villages of the region: 'new towns' built in the 13th et 14th century in an attempt to settle the artisans and peasants.
