Old world charm: half-timbered Presbytery and trailing wisteria

There are some estate agent terms which we have had to ban, such as the over-used 'stunning' or the patently untrue 'charm'. For this property, however, we have had to make an exception. Just entering the grounds and seeing the half-timbered presbytery hidden by wisteria in a garden thick with greenery, fish-ponds, palm trees and shade; and all this with the church tower on one side and a swimming pool on the other, forced us to admit that the property has 'a lot of charm'.

This is deepest Gascony, west of the regional capital Auch, just a few leagues from the Armagnac capital Eauze. The village consists of a Mairie, a couple of houses, the church and ... its presbytery.

Pushing on past the old presbytery one comes to the gites: two recently renovated gites built into a converted barn but facing away from the Presbytery towards a stand of spruce trees.

Between the main presbytery and the gite building there is a big garage and a separate 'guest room'- an ensuite bedroom used for B&B guests/friends/grannies.

The details:

- the Presbytery is a roomy three-bedroomed house (four, if we count the guest room), entirely on one level. Half-timbering inside and out bears witness to its 15th century pedigree and to the proximity of the Landes region to the west where this sort of architecture is predominant. The third bedroom is used as a study at present. The entrance hall and foyer is broad and deep and can be used as a dining-room. The lounge opens off this hallway and is separated from the kitchen by a framework of timbers. As well as a spacious kitchen there is a labyrinth of storage rooms and pantries.

The second bedroom is beyond the lounge/living room and has an en-suite bathroom. The master bedroom is on the other side of the entrance hall and it has French window access to an outdoor private terrace. Central-heating throughout.

Next to this building is the 'guest room': an en-suite bedroom with direct access to the garden and, at the back, to the kitchen.

The gite building is on two floors: the gites are duplexes, side by side, one with two bedrooms the other with just one. Both are decorated with taste and boast modern kitchens, one or two bathrooms and roof terraces/balconies with 180° views.

The gardens flow in every direction, between house and pool, lapping on to each outdoor terrace and creating blazes of colour according to the season. The pool is a nice big 10X5 metre saltwater affair which is set back from the house.

Shopping is done in Eauze which is home to one of Gascony's finest street markets. The term 'famers' market' has no currency here as everything on sale comes fresh from the producer.

Our opinion:

One is buying a bit more than the standard 'family home and two gites' business here. It's the sort of place which elicits a coup de coeur, such is the 'charm' level. It's also the sort of property where one does not ask why some of the windows are not double-glazed ... because it's perfectly obvious that the artisan capable of double-glazing 15th century window frames has not yet been born.

We would be tempted to live in one of the gites and let out the Presbytery over the summer months, such is the obvious attraction of the property. Or to run Armagnac-tasting courses followed by a duck-based table d'hôte in the Presbytery from October to May... There is a lot one could do with this property.

Gascony

Gascony in South West France covers most of the area to the south west of a line joining Bordeaux, Agen and Toulouse, that is, the western part of the Midi Pyrenees region, and the coastal section of Aquitaine.

It is one of the least inhabited regions of France, which contributes to its charm, the landscape features gentle river valleys, mixed woodland and rich farmland producing maize and sunflowers. Majestic views of the Pyrenees etch the horizon.

Pretty medieval villages of mellow stone nestle in the green rolling hills, many of them with arcaded central squares, perfect for a long lunch on a warm afternoon. Auch, the historical centre of Gascony, (and the town of D’Artagnan), boasts a magnificent cathedral, several museums, and a maze of attractive pedestrianised streets.

The climate is mild and warm and the wines of the region offer variety and quality, from the spicy red Madiran, the tannic Tursan, through to the elegant sweet Pacherenc which teams perfectly with foie gras. Then there is Armagnac, the digestif of the region, whose unique ageing process allows layers of subtle flavours to develop, and, its enthusiasts will explain, protects against heart disease and obesity.

Generally speaking, a liking for duck is useful when eating in Gascony, but there is much else besides foie gras, confit, magret de canard, and all the other iterations of that humble bird. The ‘jambon du pays’ is excellent and teams perfectly with the famed melons from Lectoure, whose fragrant juicy flesh bears no relation to their pale cousins beloved of the supermarkets. Local markets offer a vast array of excellent fresh fruit and vegetables.

The inhabitants of the area are amongst the most long lived in France, they attribute this to the high quality of their local produce, and they could be correct!
